Bullying Stops Here – Pink Shirt Day

Bullying is a big problem in our society. Everyday there are thousands of children and even adults being bullied at schools, in a work place, over internet and even in a “safety” of their own homes.

Bullying destroys families….bullying takes innocent lives….bullying causes permanent damage to self-esteem.

As a mom I  had to deal with bullying after my oldest son became disabled (grade 3) and I had to face bullying again when my autistic nephew who also suffers from Turret’s Syndrome entered public school system.

Fortunately, I found out about my children being bullied and I did not rest till it was dealt with…until the bullying STOPPED permanently.

Many children are not that lucky. They are afraid of speaking out. They are afraid of telling loved ones. Their parents  find out when it’s too late or the parents are afraid themselves.

Bullies comes in many different shapes and sizes. The biggest bully can be the sweet girl next door bullying “the known troublemaker” that nobody believes.

Shelley from I’m Still Standing recently wrote about The New Bullies: Cyberbullying & Online Harassment

Bullying is a disease of our society. Disease we don’t seem to find a permanent cure for…..not until we all get together and stand united.

We ALL need to stand up and say: “BULLYING STOPS HERE!”

The Pink Shirt Day idea was inspired by two 17 year old  Nova Scotia high school students who organized a high school protest wearing pink in support and sympathy with grade 9 student who was being bullied.

Quote from Globe & Mail:

“David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protestedd against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school.

‘I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,’ says Mr. Price, 17, who organized the pink protest. ‘Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.’

So Mr. Shepherd and some other headed off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag.

As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled.

The bullies were never heard from again.”

Lets get together and STOP BULLYING FOREVER.

  3. This sounds like a great idea – going to pass it along to my daughter’s school – they’ve been focusing on bullying as part of their curriculum and this would be a great addition to that!

What a great way to get involved! A teenage girl who was friends with my niece committed suicide last week because she was being bullied. It’s so heart breaking to think that she was pushed to take her own life. :(

    • Bibi says:

That is absolutely heartbreaking. The suicide from bullying is on a rise and we need to stand together and deal with this huge issues as a society. If every parent talked to their child and explained to them how important is to speak up for the weaker child or tell someone there would be no bullying in schools.

  9. The thought of a child having to spend his or her day in an environment that fosters fear is sickening. IMO, tolerance of bullying starts at home. If we teach our children the importance of building others up, not tearing them down, we can take a step in the right direction. A campaign like the pink shirt day is a perfect example of a way to build support for tolerance.

Stopping by from SITS 31 DBBB, this was a great post! I’m still quite young, 23, but I distinctively remember a day in high school that I pulled a sheet of paper off the printer in a class that was meant for another student. I don’t remember what was written on it but it was meant to make fun of him. Everyone got mad when I crumpled it up and threw it away but to this day I do not regret that.

      • Bibi,
I added your post to my Sunday Surf: The Best of What I Read This Week!

On another note, my daughter told me that on Monday she stood up for a child that was being picked on at school. (Mind you she is a senior in high school and a size 0, but she stood up to a group of boys no doubt bigger than her. She says they have stopped the bullying and drop their heads when she walks by them now.) She has a hidden disability (hearing loss) and so she sympathizes with children with disabilities. After she told me the story, I told her about your blog post.

        • Bibi says:

Thank you so much. I have a niece that is senior as well and she doesn’t take any punches and won’t allow anybody to bully anybody under her watch. I am so proud of her for that as I am sure you’re proud of your daughter for taking stand. It takes strong girls/women like that to make changes.

  14. Linda says:

Thank you for addressing this important issue on bullying. Good luck with all the support for your 2011 campaign. Here’s hoping its bigger and better than ever. Spread the word!

Thanks too for visiting my community on BlogFrog!

  16. Jenn@FFP says:

You’re right. The thing that bothers me the most is that it doesn’t seem to bother many school officials or even other parents. I can’t tell you how many stories I hear where the parents go to the school with a complaint and the school barely does anything about it. This leaves parents frustrated and on their own. This isn’t helpful for anyone…least of all the kids.

I’m so grateful our school has policies in place and takes a strong action against bullying.

Great post. Hopefully things will start changing in the rest of the country.
