DIY – Valentines Day Centerpiece

February 14th might be the Valentine’s Day – the day of love, but the whole month of February is LOVE month in my house.

I love to decorate my house as much as I can in red and pink colors. I spread around all kinds of heart shaped objects like red heart pillows, red heart stones for decorating, heart shaped candy dishes filled with chocolate hearts.

I make heart shaped cookies and heart shaped Peanut Butter and Jam sandwiches for kids lunches. Sunday pancakes are also little hearts with red strawberry sauce. I watch romantic movies with my husband and light up red and pink candles every evening. I totally embarrass my two boys with mushy stuff all month long. I love February.

Big part of my LOVE month are fresh flowers. Pink and red flowers. I have vase full of red and pink carnations in my bedroom. Beautiful bouquet of red tulips in my kitchen.

I enjoy making my own decorations for every holiday and occasion. This February I needed something to spruce up my boring coffee table. I decided to make pretty flower and candle centerpiece using fresh red and pink mini carnations. The mini carnations centerpiece turned out so well that I needed to share it with all of you.

For this Do-It-Yourself Valentine’s Day centerpiece you will need:

  • Oversize Coffee Mug and Saucer
  • Floral Foam (wettable foam for fresh floral design)
  • Clear Glass Votive Candle Holder
  • Red Votive Candle
  • Cinnamon Hearts Candy
  • Bunch of Red & Pink Mini Carnations
  • Sharp Scissors

Cut floral foam to fit tightly into the mug.

Dig out about 1″ deep hole in the middle of the foam for the glass candle holder. Make sure the candle holder fits in tight and it’s straight.

Soak the floral foam with water and fill up the mug as well.

Decorate by stickingĀ  mini carnation into the floral foam all around candle holderĀ  alternating red and pink.

Place it on the saucer and spread Cinnamon Hearts all around the bottom.

Don’t forget to add more water every 3 days or so.

I made this Valentines Day Centerpiece in under an hour and it cost me about $10.00. It turned out great and the fresh flowers and candles brought lots of love to my living room.

My husband gave me an oversized mug like that for our first valentines day together. I think I am going to use it to make something like this!

I have THE perfect cup for this! Unfortunately (or not) my baby’s birthday is Valentine’s Day, so all thoughts of pretty, romantic anything have flown right out the window in favor of birthday parties and presents for her.

Thanks for your comments on Creative Kitchen. You’ve got a great and informative blog here…I just followed you. I love fresh flowers…though for years too frugal to buy them. Now and then though I enjoy a bouquet from the supermarket…and usually lasts me at least a week. Love flowers!!
