Hungarian Szeged Goulash

My paternal grandfather was Hungarian. I never met him because he was killed during the WWII.

Growing up I remember grandma telling us stories about him and to feel close to him she always made us delicious Hungarian dishes whenever we visited.

One of my favorites Hungarian dishes my grandma used to make for us was Hungarian Szeged Goulash.

I started making my own Szeged Goulash for my husband shortly after we got married.

Hungarian Szeged Goulash is one of those dished you either really like or completely dislike…..To really appreciate Szeged Goulash you must love sauerkraut which is one of the main players in this dish.

My kids are 7 and 13 and only now they are developing taste and actually enjoying Hungarian Szeged Goulash served with my dad’s homemade Slovak Dumplings. Few years ago I had to force it (just kidding) on them and now they ask for seconds.

Nothing makes me happier then my kids experiencing and enjoying foods and dishes I grew up with.

This recipe makes about 8 servings of Hungarian Szeged Goulash.

Ingredients:

  • 2lbs Cubed Pork
  • 1 Onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 2 Tbsp Hungarian Paprika
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Caraway Seeds
  • 2-3 Cloves Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Flour
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 L Sauerkraut (drained)
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 3/4 cup Sour Cream

STEP 1: In a large pot melt the butter. Add finely chopped onion and Hungarian paprika. Cook while stirring for about 2 minutes. Add the cubed pork and quickly brown the pork on all sides. Salt and pepper.

STEP 2: Pour in the water and add the chopped garlic. Cover with the lid. Turn heat to medium-low and cook till pork is halfway done about 45 minutes.

STEP 3: Meanwhile wash and drain the sauerkraut.

STEP 4: After cooking the pork for 45 minutes sprinkle the meat with flour. Mix it well. Add the sauerkraut and bay leaves. Cook for another 30 minutes or until the pork and sauerkraut are done.

STEP 5: Mix in the sour cream. Cook for few more minutes.

Serve with dumplings or potatoes.
