Mad Greek Cafe Review

By now you probably know my obsession with visiting new restaurants. Watching shows like The Best Thing I Ever Ate, Man vs. Food, Diners – Drive Ins and Dives and Guy Fieri.
Mad Greek Cafe in Baker, California was the second eating establishment I made my family to visit due to Guy Fieri’s recommendation on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.
I have to admit that I visited Mad Greek Cafe in 2003 by accident during our family vacation. When I saw it on the Triple D memories started to appear and I did recall the great food we had there.
Of course when we were planning another family vacation that involved driving from Anaheim to Las Vegas I had to put Mad Greek Cafe on the itinerary. How could I not?
The Mad Greek Cafe is not the most esthetically pleasing eating establishment I ever visited, but it’s not the worst either.
It looks old, tired and gaudy inside and out. It could use a little face lift and some TLC. It’s filled with lots of Greek and Italian statues, pictures, mismatched decorations, signs. Whatever you can think of is probably somewhere there.
Despite the first impression the food was very good, quick and affordable. The portions were big and the shakes one of the best we ever had.
We stopped at the Mad Greek Cafe around noon middle of September. The place wasn’t extremely busy, but there was few customers enjoying lunch here and there.

The service is cafeteria style. You order your meal from a large menu board at the counter. The server gives you a number. You pick your own spot to sit and the meal will be brought to you by the server.
Perfect place for quick meal and for families with children.
Since we were a large group of 9 we decided to try few different things.
According to their outside sign they have the best GYROS in the USA so of course Gyros were the first thing on our list.

Gyros were delicious and filling. The meat was tender and full of flavor. The Tzaziki sauce had the perfect crunch and the perfect amount of garlic.
Onassis Burger was done perfectly, the meat was juicy and the pastrami on top brought it all together.
Zucchini fries were cooked well, but still crunchy. Not greasy at all.
Beef Souvlaki combo was very good. Beef was tender and flavorful. The rice was different , but not bad.
Greek salad was one of the only meals none of us really enjoyed. The vegetables were not fresh. They were mushy from sitting in a dressing for too long.
Baklava was delicious. Lots of honey, nuts and cinnamon. The best I ever had.
Milkshakes were made from real ice cream. They were thick, creamy and hit the spot. My kids order milkshake everywhere we go and according to them these were the best milkshakes.

I read many bad reviews about the Mad Greek Cafe. They ranged from gross food to overpriced fast food. I don’t know if we visited the Mad Greek Cafe at the right time, but I would not compare them to any fast food I know. I don’t think they are overpriced for what you get and we truly had really good food and delicious desserts.

I love Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives! It’s sad but I have never had a gyro. I really need to try them.
When you get an opportunity you really must try gyro. When made properly they are so yummy.
I can’t’ watch those shows all the time or I’ll eat my face! The foods always look so yum and then the places are rarely in LA.
Cute kids!
Glad you get to visit and enjoy.
Every time I watch those Foodnetwork shows I get hungry and then I try to figure out how they made it. I think it’s half of the fun for me.
I love their zucchini fries!
I am not big deep fried vegetables lover. I like mine raw, but their zucchini fries were unbelievable.
